How Much Money Did Gangnam Style Make

So, you've probably heard of this little ditty called "Gangnam Style," right? I mean, it's not like you could avoid it back in 2012. It was everywhere - from your mom's Facebook feed to your kid's school assembly. It was like the musical equivalent of that one friend who always shows up uninvited but with the best party stories.

But just how much cash did this horse-riding, disco-fever dance craze rake in?

Well, buckle up, 'cause we're about to dive into the money pool like Psy diving into that fancy fountain in his music video.

First things first, let's talk YouTube.

YouTube is where "Gangnam Style" really made a splash. It was the first video to hit 1 billion views on the platform, and as of now, it's clocked in over 3.8 billion views. That's more views than there are stars in the galaxy (okay, maybe not quite that many, but you get the idea).

Now, YouTube doesn't exactly pay out like a Las Vegas slot machine. Creators make money through ads, and the pay rate varies, but let's do some back-of-the-napkin math. If we assume a conservative average pay rate of $0.50 per 1,000 views (which can vary greatly), "Gangnam Style" would have made around $1.9 million just from YouTube ads alone.

But wait, there's more!

Remember when we said "Gangnam Style" was everywhere? We meant it. It was on TV, in movies, in commercials, and even in that one episode of "The Big Bang Theory" where Sheldon does the dance. Every time it played, Psy and his team made money.

Here's where things get a bit tricky, 'cause music royalties are a bit like trying to figure out your grandma's secret recipe - nobody's quite sure how it all adds up. But we do know that "Gangnam Style" was a global phenomenon, and it was played. A lot. So, let's say it made another $2 million from royalties. That's a conservative estimate, but remember, we're just making a point here, not a bank deposit.

And then there's the merchandise.

T-shirts, hats, keychains, you name it - if you could slap "Gangnam Style" on it, someone made it. And someone else bought it. We're talking millions more here, folks. But again, it's hard to pin down an exact number. Let's just say it's enough to buy a few fancy horses and call it a day.

So, how much money did "Gangnam Style" make in total?

Well, if we add up our back-of-the-napkin math, we're looking at around $5.9 million. But remember, this is just a fun little exercise. The real number is probably higher. Much higher.

And there you have it, folks. "Gangnam Style" made a small fortune, and all it took was a catchy tune, a quirky dance, and the power of the internet. It's like they say, "Do the 'Gangnam Style,' and the money will follow." Or something like that.
